エチオピアで生まれ育って
私は、コーヒー発祥の地・エチオピアで生まれ、日本との両国を行き来して育ちました。
エチオピアにとってコーヒーは、ただの飲み物ではありません。
人と人が集い、語り合い、喜びや悲しみを分かち合うための、生活に深く根ざした大切な文化です。
一杯のコーヒーを囲む時間の中で、立場や年齢を越えて人がつながっていく。
その光景は、今も私の原体験として心に残っています。
メッセージ｜Founder Message
コーヒーを通して、人の尊厳と喜びを分かち合いたい。
日本で暮らし、働く中で、便利さや効率の裏側で、心が置き去りにされているような感覚を覚えることがありました。
だからこそ、エチオピアで育った「人を大切にするコーヒー文化」を
日本、そして世界に伝えたいと思うようになりました。
Ethiopian Coffee Loverは、エチオピアのコーヒーが、日本の感性と丁寧な仕事を通して磨かれ、再び世界へとつながっていく、そんな循環を生み出すために生まれました。
誰かが一方的に支えるのではなく、誰かが犠牲になるのでもなく、関わるすべての人が誇りと喜びを分かち合えること。
それが私たちの目指す、コーヒーのあり方です。
背景と経緯｜Background & Journey
コーヒーを通して、社会と人をつなぐまで
エチオピアと日本、二つの文化をルーツに持つ中で育った私は、
早くから「どちらかが一方的に支援する関係」ではなく、
互いの良さが行き交う関係性をつくりたいと考えるようになりました。
大学時代、フェアトレードコーヒーをテーマに研究し、
論文執筆のためエチオピアで現地調査を行いました。
しかし、理想として学んだ言葉と、
現場で目の当たりにした現実との間には、大きな隔たりがありました。
その違和感から、より深くコーヒーの現場を知るため、
生産・流通・消費のすべてに自ら関わる道を選びました。
エチオピアのコーヒー農園で生産の現場に立ち、
現地の輸出会社で流通に携わり、
日本では輸入・焙煎・バリスタとして、
コーヒーを消費者のもとへ届けてきました。
この間、長い時間を要しましたが、農園での生産からカップまで、トレーサビリティの各現場を実際に経験してきたことは、私にとって大きな財産です。
理想と現実の間で悩み、思うようにいかない経験も重ねながら、働く人の尊厳や、持続可能な仕事のあり方について、問い続けてきました。
その問いの先に生まれたのが、ECL「Ethiopian Coffee Lover」のブランドです。
コーヒーの味わいの奥深さの楽しさを伝えながら、人と人、文化と文化、社会と社会をやさしくつなぎ直していく。そのための試みとして、このブランドは歩み始めました。
スペシャルティ・コーヒーという体験
五感と心で味わう、一杯の時間
スペシャルティコーヒーは、世界で流通するコーヒーの中でも上位約5％とされる高品質の豆。だからこそ、香りや味わい、余韻にまではっきりとした違いが生まれます。
果実のような明るい酸味、花を思わせる香り、口の中に静かに残る甘さや余韻。
それらは偶然ではなく、土地の個性と、生産者の手仕事、そして豆の持つ力が重なり合って生まれるものです。
そして、スペシャルティ・コーヒーは、淹れ方ひとつで、驚くほど表情を変えます。お湯の温度、挽き目、抽出時間。わずかな違いが、味わいを大きく左右します。
だからこそ、バリスタの技術が問われるのです。豆の個性を読み取り、その魅力を引き出すこと。
ECLでは、コーヒーをただ提供するのではなく、一杯の中に込められた背景や想いごと、丁寧に手渡すことを大切にしています。
忙しさや情報に追われる日常の中で、一杯のコーヒーを囲む時間が、五感をひらき、心をほどくひとときとなるように。
それが、ECLが届けたい「スペシャルティ・コーヒーという体験」です。
Future｜これから
次の世代へつなぐために
ECLはコーヒーを「売る」ためだけのブランドではなく、一時的な流行や利益だけを追うブランドでもありません。コーヒーを通して、人と社会の関係を編み直していく試みです。
同じ問いを持ち、誠実なものづくりや仕事のあり方を大切にする方と、コーヒーをひとつのツールとして、試行錯誤を惜しまない仲間と出会いたいと願っています。
生産者が誇りを持てるコーヒーを飲む人が安心して楽しめる形で届けること。そして、一杯のコーヒーを囲む時間が、忙しさや緊張の中で消耗している心と身体をそっと緩め、自分らしさを取り戻せる場となること。コーヒーを通して生まれる小さなつながりの積み重ねが、社会や世界をやさしく結んでいく。
その循環を、これからも丁寧につくり続けていきます。立場や国を越えて、共に歩んでいけたら嬉しく思います。

Background & Journey
Coffee is more than just a product to me.
It has always been a tool — a way to connect people, cultures, and societies.
Growing up between Ethiopia and Japan,
I came to question relationships where one side simply “supports” the other.
Instead, I have long believed in creating connections where
values, dignity, and strengths flow both ways.
I have worked across the entire journey of coffee —
from production at Ethiopian coffee farms,
to export and distribution,
and finally to importing, roasting, and serving coffee in Japan.
Although it took many years,
experiencing each stage of traceability firsthand —
from seed to cup — has become one of my greatest assets.
My journey began at university,where I studied fair trade coffee and traveled to Ethiopia for field research.
What I encountered there, however, was a wide gap between the ideals of “fair trade” and the realities on the ground.
That discomfort pushed me to go deeper.
To truly understand production, I lived and worked for nearly four months on a coffee farm where very few outsiders — especially Japanese — had ever entered. Life there, without electricity or running water, was physically demanding, but it allowed me to understand coffee not as a concept, but as the result of human hands, time, and resilience.
Along the way, I faced challenges, setbacks, and the difficulty of building business relationships across cultures. Things did not always go as planned.
Still, I did not give up.
I returned to Japan and worked as a barista, standing on the consumer side of coffee. There, I was confronted with deeper questions — about labor dignity, sustainability, and what it truly means to work with respect for people.
As both Ethiopian and Japanese, I have continued to show sincerity wherever I worked, while facing cultural differences, limitations, and realities that effort alone cannot always overcome.
At the same time, I met companions — people who shared the work,
the struggles, and the hopes behind it.
These are people I deeply treasure.
Philosophy
All of these experiences shape Ethiopian Coffee Lover.
Our goal is not to grow by sacrificing someone else.
Instead, we aim to build a business that generates real value and stable livelihoods, while preserving dignity for everyone involved.
I know how difficult this challenge is.
But I refuse to give up on creating both profit and well-being, sustainability and humanity.
The Experience of Specialty Coffee
A Moment to Taste with All Five Senses and the Heart
Among all the coffee traded around the world, only about the top 5% is classified as specialty grade. That level of quality is what allows clear differences in aroma, flavor, and lingering finish to emerge.
Bright, fruit-like acidity, floral aromas, and a gentle sweetness that quietly remains on the palate.
These qualities are not accidental. They are born from the character of the land, the careful hands of producers, and the inherent potential of the coffee itself.
Specialty coffee also reveals how dramatically its expression can change
depending on how it is brewed. Water temperature, grind size, extraction time — even subtle differences can transform the cup entirely.
That is why the skill of the barista truly matters.
Reading the character of each coffee and drawing out its best expression
is both a craft and a responsibility.
At Ethiopian Coffee Lover, we do not simply serve coffee.
We carefully pass on the stories, backgrounds, and intentions carried within each cup.
In the midst of busy, demanding days, we hope that a moment shared over coffee can gently open the senses, soften the heart, and allow people to return to themselves.
This is the experience we seek to offer through specialty coffee.
Looking Forward — For the Next Generation
Ethiopian Coffee Lover is not a brand built on trends or short-term gains.
We strive to deliver coffee that producers can be proud of, in a form that consumers can trust and enjoy with peace of mind.
Beyond the cup, we hope to create spaces where people can slow down,
feel at ease, and reconnect with themselves amid demanding lives.
Through coffee, small connections are formed.
Those connections, over time, can gently weave people, communities, and societies together.
This is the cycle we are committed to building — carefully, honestly, and together.
We look forward to walking alongside those who share these values,
across borders, cultures, and roles.
